The composition and characteristic of water-repellent films coated on an Ophthalmic lens

Abstract
Purpose: This paper was to study the composition and characteristic of water-repellent films coated on a high refractive index Ophthalmic lens by no curvature.

Methods: The water-repellent films on a high refractive index Ophthalmic lens were coated with thicknesses of 5 nm, 10 nm, 20 nm, 30 nm, 40 nm by using the electron beam vapor deposition apparatus. ATR-FTIR equipment was used to observe the components of the films, and refractive index and thickness of the film were measured using a spectroscopic ellipsometry method. The contact angles with water and of the films were also obtained to see the water and oil repellency, and the coefficients of friction of the films were calculated to find the non-adhesion of the films with a dust and a foreign matter.

Result: By FTIR result of observing component of the film, it was found that the water-repellent film was the organic compound containing organic fluorine. The refractive index of the film was measured with 1.6026 at 587.56 nm wavelength and Abbe¡¯s number of the film was calculated with 49 from Spectroscopic Ellipsometry method. The contact angles with water of the films were for non-coating high refractive index lens and when a thickness of the film was 20 nm, and were increased little by little as the thickness of the film was thicker. The contact angle with was for non-coating high refractive index lens and was when a thickness of the film was 20 nm. It was found that the contact angle was saturated with increasing of thickness. The kinetic coefficient of friction of the film was 0.410 for non-coating high refractive index lens, and 0.626 when a thickness of the film was 5nm. It became smaller in accordance with the thickness of the coating film, and finally 0.167 at 40 nm thickness of the film.

Conclusion: Water-repellent film on Ophthalmic lens was contained the organic fluorine compound, and the refractive index was 1.6026, the contact angles of water and oil repellent were and respectively when the coating film was 20 nm thickness, the kinetic coefficient of friction of water-repellent film was 0.167 at 40 nm thickness of the film.
